Amanda Simpson's Gold Handbag Design The Ultimate Accessory River Island Award.
It was in 2006, the final year of my fashion design degree that I entered one of the many competitions set by River Island for fashion design students in the UK. The brief was to design the Ultimate Accessory which would take the form of a Handbag. Hand drawn sketches had to be developed, keeping in mind the shape, size and materials to be used etc. The bag would then be made up to the design specifications. The completed design was entered into the competition along with the story board. After a short while I would receive the news that my handbag design had won the Graduate Fashion Week 2006 River Island Ultimate Accessory Award! The handbag prototype was then manufactured and retailed by River Island. After graduating from Northumbria University, Newcastle Upon Tyne, I was advised by River Island that along with the £500 prize money a short work placement at River Island's design department in London was included in the prize. Whilst at River Island It became apparent that the bag I had designed had an, "Antique/Vintage feel to it", as one of the design management had remarked. Fashion History had already been studied as part of the fashion degree and would prove to be invaluable. Onward then to 2007 and armed with my knowledge of costume history and my love of Antique & Vintage clothes (not to mention handbags!). My passion for fashion would develop over the next few years into a new business called "The Fashion Studio Ltd", an online Antique and Vintage clothing shop.
